Debate

In this context, informal debates are not meant!

The participants try to prove their positions, they want to demonstrate to the other participants that they are right. It can also get a bit more heated and passionate, but it is not allowed for feelings and emotions to take over. The characteristic feature of a debate is that it still runs in good faith of all involved, despite this fact, and everyone tries to understand the arguments of the others. Normally, the expectations at the end of a debate are that all participants come to some kind of consensus, an agreement on who was really right. This would be the actual goal of a normal debate. Ultimately, however, debates usually do not run as such and often escalate into arguments.
